In another blow to Johnson & Johnson, a Florida jury ordered the manufacturer to pay $9 million to a woman who blamed her cancer on asbestos-tainted talc. Photo of courtroom

The verdict was reached last week. The woman, 89, claimed that over her lifetime of baby powder use, she devolved mesothelioma, directly linked to asbestos exposure. It is the second trial loss of the year for J&J over asbestos-talc claims.

Earlier in the month, a New Jersey jury ordered the company to pay $750 million in damages to four people, which was later reduced by a judge to $186.5 million.

J&J currently faces almost 18,000 lawsuits nationally over talc-cancer claims. There has been some discussion over possible settlements, as some experts have said the company could lose as much as $10 billion in verdicts.

Lawyers have been able to successfully claim in cases that J&J withheld internal documents showing that executives knew in the 1960s that talc mined in certain places in the world contained asbestos but failed to notify the government or consumers.

Asbestos exposure is directly linked to mesothelioma, as well as colon cancer, stomach cancerthroat cancer and kidney cancer.
