Bayer AG recently agreed to postpone U.S. trials involving Roundup weed killer claims to allow for further time for mediation and a possible settlement.
Bloomberg reported two trials scheduled to begin in January in California have been delayed. As of October, there were more than 42,700 claims nationally involving plaintiffs arguing that Roundup weed killer caused them non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other forms of cancer.
Bayer has suffered massive verdicts in cases that have gone to trial and may be looking to settle to avoid further costly litigation. In one case, a California man was awarded $289 million, saying he developed cancer after using Roundup products regularly.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, found glyphosate, used in Roundup, is a probable carcinogen.
Bloomberg reported that settlements could be valued at $10 to $12 billion combined for all plaintiffs. Bayer is appealing verdicts that have been reached, but executives said the appeals will not impact mediation discussions.
