Tragically, it appears as though the number of cycling fatalities in the United States is rising, as bicycles are becoming a popular way to commute.
According to the Washington Post, from 2010 to 2012, fatal bicycle accidents in the U.S. increased by 16 percent. These accidents involved crash es with motor vehicles.
The data in the Post article comes from the Governors Highway Safety Association, which said that fatal accidents increased from 621 in 2010, to 722 in 2012.
The increase is alarming for advocates, who continue to promote biking as a healthy alternative to vehicle transportation. The Post also reported that during the same period, other vehicle accidents only grew by 1 percent.
Additionally, the Post reported that adults 20 and over comprised 84 percent of bicycle fatalities in 2012.
Bicycling is incredibly popular in Central Texas, especially in the Austin-area. Make sure you stay safe if you are a cyclist by wearing a helmet and obeying the rules of the road.
Additionally, if you are a motorist, you should show cyclists respect by avoiding distracted driving and/or merging into protected bicycle lanes while you are operating a vehicle.
