Colgate-Palmolive has settled an asbestos-talc powder lawsuit in California involving a man who says he suffers from mesothelioma due to product use.
Terms of the settlement, which was reached earlier this month, have not been reported. It is another major blow to baby powder manufacturers, including those like Johnson & Johnson that have had a slew of lawsuits filed and multi-million dollar verdicts announced.
As we have reported at our asbestos blog, many consumers are coming forward claiming they have inhaled fibers or absorbed asbestos materials through the use of baby powder.
The link is through talc, one of the earth’s softest materials, often found and mined through minerals at sites that also contain asbestos. Lawsuits claim the mining leads to the transfer of asbestos to talc products including baby powder.
Asbestos exposure is directly linked to mesothelioma, as well as colon cancer, stomach cancer, throat cancer and kidney cancer.
In April, a New Jersey man successfully won a $117 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson claiming he developed cancer through decades of baby powder use. In the case, attorneys argued that Johnson & Johnson began holding back information from customers about the health risks of asbestos in talc products in the 1960s.
