According to CBS News, Bayer is looking to offer $8 billion to settle about 18,000 cancer injury claims over its weed killer Roundup.

CBS News reported earlier this month that Bayer is hoping that attorneys representing claimants agree to the deal, which is less than the $10 billion they are currently seeking. Experts note, however, that it could take several months for a settlement to be approved after serious negotiations.

Some media outlets are reporting that a settlement offer has not been discussed, including Reuters, which has produced many investigative reports on the subject of Roundup and cancer claims. The news outlet reported, through a quote from a Bayer mediator, that it has not proposed paying the $8 billion.

Bayer has lost several high-profile cases over Roundup’s link to cancer. One California man was awarded $289 million after he successfully sued Monsanto claiming that Roundup weed killer caused him non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The attention generated by the cases has resulted in Bayer saying in annual reports that it expects more lawsuits to emerge. As we have reported in previous blogs, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, found glyphosate is a probable carcinogen.
