A Texas firefighter was recently awarded $1.2 million after claiming that he was injured due to a defective Cook Celect IVC filter.
According to LegalScoops.com, the man had the filter implanted to fight blood clots that were getting to his heart and lungs. He claims that after it was implanted, doctors told him after seven weeks that it became embedded in a blood vessel.
In the lawsuit, the man claimed that he also was injured by doctors who perforated his small intestine and aorta while trying to remove the device, which proved to be unsuccessful. The lawsuit was filed against Cook Medical, the device manufacturer.
The man claims that he will now require a lifetime of medical treatment to ensure the device does not continue to move in his body. NBC News recently did a report indicating that IVC filters have been linked to as many as 39 deaths due to movement.
The devices can allegedly perforate organs if they break, or move and become lodged in blood vessels, causing major medical complications. Surgeries can be performed to remove the devices, but often they are difficult, and in some cases unsuccessful.
