According to USA Today, President Donald Trump’s administration is slowing attempts to address safety issues when it comes to truck accidents.
The news source reports that a dozen safety rules under development or already adopted have been repealed or delayed since Trump took office in January 2017. No significant rule changes have been implemented since his inauguration.
“The sidelined rules would have, among other things, required states to conduct annual inspections of commercial bus operators, railroads to operate trains with at least two crew members and automakers to equip future cars and light trucks with vehicle-to-vehicle communications to prevent collisions,” USA Today reported.
Many of the proposed changes are opposed by transportation industry lobbying groups. The Department of Transportation reportedly has indicated under Trump that it can reduce regulations without hurting the safety of motorists.
DOT allegedly declined to be interviewed when an investigation into the rolled back or delayed proposals was launched by the Associated Press.
“We will not finalize a rule simply because it has advanced through preliminary steps,” James Owens, DOT’s deputy general counsel said in a statement, according to USA Today. “Even if a rule is ‘one step away,’ if that rule is not justifiable because it harms safety and imposes unnecessarily high economic costs, for example, that rule will not advance.”

Injured in a Truck Accident?
It is unfortunate that our lawmakers seem to be siding with powerful transportation companies rather than with the safety of citizens. Over the past decade in Texas, data indicates that there has been an increase in the total number of truck accidents each year.
Many of these accidents have resulted in fatalities and traumatic injuries. Often, these accidents occur due to negligence on the part of trucking companies and/or drivers. Negligent truck accidents can occur due to preventable mechanical failures, driver errors and/or companies forcing drivers to work while fatigued.
If you have been injured in a truck accident, you should hold the negligent party liable. We can review your truck crash and can potentially help you move forward with litigation that can pay for medical treatment and rehabilitation. We are the personal injury law experts of Central Texas.
